In Gear for the New Year
January 2009
Hello all, Things are quietly moving along on a number of fronts here at Obsidian. First up is our Evening With Obsidian event on February 10 th. We had 50 tickets to see the Color Purple and the response has been so great to our initial ticket offering that we had to get 15 more. Currently we are at capacity, however if you are interested in being added to our waiting list please contact the office (416.463.8444) and we will do our best to accommodate you. An Evening with Obsidian: The cast of The Color Purple
This looks like it will be a fine evening. A great show, some comestibles at intermission and a tax receipt to boot. I look forward to seeing you there. As we head towards Black History Month we thought that it would be great to celebrate some of the many people who have worked with us over the years. So every day of the month of February we will feature one Black artist along with a short interview on the Obsidian Blog. Stop by http://obsidiantheatre.blogspot.com and check it out. You may be surprised by who you find has been hanging out with us. Finally, I am currently directing Andrew Moodie’s new play “ Toronto the Good” for the Factory Theatre. It is a complex, current story about Toronto, race, profiling and life. I am enjoying the whole process very much. I think that this is going to be quite an amazing production so please come out and see it if you can and take advantage of the deal below- it is well worth it!
Here’s the Deal: Special offer to Obsidian Theatre patrons from Factory Theatre: Factory Theatre Presents the World Premiere of TORONTO THE GOOD Written by: Andrew Moodie Directed by: Philip Akin
(* Any performance between February 6th and March 1st, 2009, subject to availability)
Also, I would like to welcome Kimberley Rampersad as my Apprentice Director on “ Toronto the Good”. Kimberley is here from Winnipeg as part of our Mentor/Apprentice program and while she has been a great help to me thus far I am not sure that I have forgiven her for bringing all that Manitoba weather with her. A winter survival tip: I heard on CBC Radio the other day that if you walk into a store backwards then your glasses won’t fog up. Lets just say that people trying this have reported mixed results. I leave it to you to see for yourselves but I urge you to be careful walking backwards. And that is Obsidian for this month. Take care and stay warm, Philip
